ILMI Laws is an independent guide to the laws of Illinois and Michigan. We answer one kind of question: is this legal here, and what are the rules? Can you grow cannabis at home in Michigan? How dark can your window tint be in Illinois? Does either state still recognize common law marriage? Each answer comes with the statute behind it.
Why two states on one site
Illinois and Michigan share a lake, a lot of commuters and a long list of questions. People drive between Chicago and southwest Michigan every weekend, buy cannabis in one state and wonder about the other, and move for work across the state line. Putting both states side by side makes the differences easy to see. Every guide covers one state only, then links to the matching guide for the other state.
How we work
- We start with the primary source. The Illinois Compiled Statutes, the Michigan Compiled Laws, court opinions, administrative rules and official agency guidance.
- We check before we publish. A second review compares every factual claim with the source text.
- We date everything. Each guide shows when it was last verified and keeps a short log of what changed.
- We fix mistakes in the open. Corrections are logged on our corrections page.
Read the full editorial policy for how we choose topics, cite sources and update guides.
Who writes the guides
Our guides are written by Avery Lindqvist, who researches Illinois and Michigan law from the primary text, and are checked by a second reviewer before they go live. We are not a law firm and we do not offer legal advice or represent anyone.
